Seoul Shakespeare Company is pleased to announce auditions for our ninth main stage production.

After years of building a strong ensemble of actors, while welcoming new actors into the SSC community each year, our company is finally ready to take on King Lear. The play was originally written for a strong group of actors who had worked together for a long time, and we will need an excellent cast to bring this masterpiece to life. We hope you will be a part of the experience.

This will be the final production for our artistic director/actor/producer Lauren Ash-Morgan and director/actor Michael Downey, after nine years with the company. The company will continue to be in good hands after their departure, with new perspectives and styles. Let's make this production a great one as we end this chapter of our history and prepare to open up a new one.

Audition Dates:
Saturday December 1st, 1:00-4:50pm
Sunday December 2nd, 1:00-4:50pm
(Call backs Sunday December 9, 1:00-4:50pm.)

Location: Our rehearsal space near Sungshin Women's University Station (성신여대입구역) (Line #4) (see directions below)

Actors of all experience levels are welcome to audition. We are looking for a strong ensemble of actors who function well in a collaborative environment. This year we are not asking for prepared monologues. Auditionees will be asked to read from sides. The sides will be posted here approximately one week before auditions. They do not need to be memorized. We highly recommend getting some familiarity with the entire play before the audition, through reading the play and/or watching a variety of productions on video.

At least one character in this play sings. We will give all auditionees an opportunity to sing something in the audition if they wish (just a few bars, unaccompanied). Also, if you play a musical instrument, please bring it to the audition if possible.

To schedule your audition, email with your name, phone number, and preferred audition time.

Performances will be on the weekends of: May 18-19, 25-26, and June 1-2, 2019 at Theater Egg and Nucleus (알과핵 소극장) in Daehangno (대학로), Seoul.

First rehearsal: Saturday, December 15, 2018, 11am-4pm.

Regular Rehearsal Times:

We have booked our rehearsal space for: Saturdays 11am-4pm, Sundays 4pm-9pm, and Thursdays 7-10pm.

(Not everyone will be called at all times, and we will work our rehearsal schedule around actors’ schedules as much as possible. Please be aware that we may adjust this regular schedule or add additional rehearsal times if actors’ schedules make it necessary.)

We may have additional rehearsals in the theatre between our theatre load-in date (Wednesday, May 8) and our opening (May 18), depending on actors’ availability.

This year we are beginning rehearsals on December 15 (the week after callbacks) in order to do some basic full-cast work before the vacation season. We understand that people might go away during the holidays, and we plan to work around actors' holiday schedules. **If you plan to travel for more than two weeks during the rehearsal period, you may still audition, but be aware that it may affect our ability to cast you.

We will not be rehearsing January 7-23, as our SSC core artistic team will be on a panel at the Shakespeare Theatre Association's conference in Prague during that time.

We may have rehearsals during Seollal for those actors who are available. We will check actors' individual preferences at the audition. (Seollal rehearsal preferences will not affect casting.)

We are coordinating schedules with Seoul Players' March production of Aristophanes's The Birds, so that actors can be in both shows. Hence the long rehearsal period, to make room for compromises, and the earlier rehearsal times on Saturdays and later times on Sundays, so actors can spend a half day on our show and a half day with Seoul Players. Actors who wish to be in both companies' shows should be aware that they will be very busy!

Tech Weekend:

Saturday May 11: All day (Hanging lights, etc. Actors are probably not needed on this day but are encouraged to come and help.)
Sunday May 12: All day (Tech/Dress Rehearsal—All cast and crew MUST be at this rehearsal!)

(If Monday, May 13 is a day off (for Buddha's Birthday observed), this might be a rehearsal day as well.)

***At the audition, be prepared to write down ANY and ALL your potential rehearsal conflicts, including work schedules, days that you will be away, etc.

Please do not hesitate to email us with any questions or concerns you may have. (
